belly dance experience is recommended. Bring your own zils and/ or
hand drums if you have them.
TURKISH ROM (Gypsy) STYLE DANCE
While certainly a major influence
on Turkish Belly Dance, the Rom style is unique in that it is characterized by
the use of footwork, culturally specific hand gestures, and an earthy feel.
Music is usually in the 9/8 rhythm, played with hand drums such as the
darbuka or doumbek, violin, ney, kanoon as well as prominent vocals.
We will
explore the 9/8 rhythm, study specific movements, footwork and gestures
characteristic of this dance form, and dance a brief
improvisational style choreography.
